For that person, the life fabric that is woven from this understanding becomes firm, supportive and continues to reinforce no matter what life challenges may arise.
ONE OF THE MEANINGS OF THE SANKSRT WORD “SUTRA” IS “THREAD” AND AS SUCH IT IS VIEWED AS SOMETHING WHICH WEAVES AND HOLDS SOMETHING TOGETHER.
IN THE CASE OF THE PATANJALI YOGA SUTRAS, THEY WEAVE TOGETHER ALL OF THE VARIANT ASPECTS OF THE HU-MAN BEING WITH ALL LEVELS OF YOGA PRACTICE. THUS, THEY ARE SO COMPREHENSIVE THAT ALL OVER THE WORLD THEY ARE RECOGNIZED AS THE VERY FOUNDATION FOR ANY TYPE OF YOGA PRACTICE NO MATTER WHERE AND HOW IT MIGHT BE FOLLOWED.
FOR YOGA ASPIRANTS AND PRACTITIONERS, KNOWING THE SUTRAS LENDS TO AND ULTIMATELY COM-LETES ONE’S YOGA PRACTICE.
WEAVING THE FABRIC
EVERY HUMAN BEING HAS FOUR LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE:
Within these four levels, there are endless varieties of expression. Either consciously or unconsciously, people strive to maintain a life of balance or harmony of these levels Otherwise, too much imbalance results in suffering and sorrow.
As the very foundation of all yoga practices, the Patanjali Yoga Sutras recognize this challenge and provide both broad spectrum and individualized solutions. Just as doing postures restores the body learning the Sutras rejuvenates the mind.
Knowing the Sutras allows the person to be-come well equipped and directed in steering all levels on a balanced course through life.
Therefore, such a study is not dry, rote or mundane but rather it is vibrant, engaging and enervating because it presents to the student the very dynamic and balanced nature of him/herself.
Ultimately, the Sutras go beyond that as they recognize the transcendent essence of the person which is the same in all beings and the universe.
