About Our Classes

Delray Yoga Shala offers a variety of classes, each of which are unique and accessible to all levels of practitioners – from the new and inquisitive yogi to the advanced practitioner. We ask that you please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled practice time to settle in. And please be advised that no one will be allowed to enter the studio after class starts. Please turn off all cell phones and honor noble silence in the shala; so please, refrain from talking once inside the studio. We have 2 showers available for use within the shala, and we provide mats, towels, and yogi toes for a small fee if needed.

Ashtanga Fusion

In this class we explore aspects of the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method, incorporating the tristhana method of breathing with sound, Asana {posture} & Dristi {gazing or focal point}, while integrating elements of both the primary & intermediate series of Ashtanga Yoga.

Like traditional Ashtanga vinyasa, the emphasis is on breath, alignment, strength, stability, & flexibility, all the while cultivating a deep internal meditative state. If you are new to the Ashtanga yoga method, have a background in vinyasa yoga, or are looking to mix up your daily Ashtanga or vinyasa yoga practice, you will find peace, bliss, and joy in this dynamic & invigorating practice.

90 minutes, open to ALL LEVELS. See our schedule here.

Mysore

Named after the city in South India where the Ashtanga Yoga Method originated, & the home of its founder, the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois and current lineage holder Sharath Rangaswami, this class provides a space where practitioners of all levels may step onto their mat to learn, practice, & fully integrate the teachings of the traditional Ashtanga Yoga Method.

Mysore practice is a self practice, yet under the eye of a watchful and skilled teacher; a unique style carrying the heart & essence of Ashtanga yoga. Students are challenged by a consistent & daily practice, one that provides the fertile ground for evolution both in asana, as well as in the deeper aspects of meditation & self realization. In this practice space you will receive hands on adjustments, personal guidance, & the development of a personal practice unique to the Ashtanga Method. Come with an open mind, a compassionate heart, and a spirit of surrender.

Mysore Etiquette:

In the Mysore room we follow the traditional Ashtanga method as taught by SKPJ and Sharat Jois in Mysore India. Poses outside this method are not allowed in the Mysore room.

Half Primary

If you are new to the Ashtanga Yoga method this class is a wonderful choice with which to begin. We progress through the primary series as traditionally taught, emphasizing breath, gaze, and posture, yet we conclude half way through the series with Navasana, and proceed from there to enter the closing postures. By focusing on the first half of the series, you will gain a thorough understanding of the vinyasa yoga method, the alignment of the standing sequence, how to jump back and through with ease, as well as the keys to healthy forward bends, twists, and hip openers.

A perfect way to gain fluidity, strength, and ease within the Ashtanga yoga method, practicing the first half of the primary series will truly prime your body, mind, and spirit with a solid foundation upon which your yoga practice may then thrive.

90 minutes, open to ALL LEVELS. See our schedule here.

Guided Ashtanga Primary Series

The primary series of Ashtanga Yoga is known as Yoga Chikitsa, or Yoga Therapy, and it is just that – a yoga practice that is therapy for both the body and mind as it both purifies and heals. In this class we focus on the mind-body-breath connection, and emphasize proper breathing {ujjayi}, focus or gaze {dristi}, and posture {asana}. This three pronged approach is unique to the Ashtanga Yoga method and allows us to delve deeper into our internal practice while moving through the physical forms, so that we may cultivate and maintain a meditative state of mind. We follow the traditional vinyasa method and count.

The primary series of Ashtanga yoga is a fast paced and dynamic flow that is the foundation for more advanced postures & each subsequent series.

90 minutes, open to Intermediate and Advanced Students. See our schedule here.

DYS Power Hour

DYS’s Power Hour comes from the Ashtanga tradition, but eschews a set order of poses in favor of creative sequencing. This class will include sun salutations, standing poses, balancing postures, seated and twisting poses, backbends, and core isolation. Special emphasis will be placed on moving in and out of postures safely, and how to connect movement with breath. Students can expect to build strength, range-of-motion, and peace of mind.

This class is for everyone – from beginners to advanced practitioners. See our schedule here.
